Chapter One

Etalia: 3rd December, 2015.

“Nothing lasts forever. Forever is a lie. All we have is what’s in between hello and goodbye.”

It was another quiet day at the library. Nissa sat there alone ruffling through the pages of the book of quotes in front of her, until she came across this particular quote. Her fingers froze on that page, for an instant as her mind wandered into deep thoughts.

It was the first week of December. Winter had just set in. A chilly breeze blew in through the window nearby causing Nissa to shiver as her mind settled back to the present. She recalled how she was waiting for Aartissa and Rosia to finish their dance practice. She glanced over at her wrist watch, shut the quotation book in front of her and got up. She placed the book back on its rack and headed towards the door.

“Ah, are you leaving already, princess?”

Nissa turned around to see the librarian Ms. Tarada standing near a book rack with a book in her hand.

Nissa smiled at her and said, “Yes, I was just waiting for Aartissa and Rosia.”

“Oh I see. Can you do me a favour then? Could you please give this book to your brother? He was looking for it yesterday.”

Nissa took the book and said, “Sure. I will give it to him. Goodbye then.”

Ms. Tarada waved and said, “Goodbye, my dear. Have a nice day, ahead!”

Just as Nissa stepped out of the library, she bumped into someone.

“Ah princess! You were in the library again?”

Nissa looked up to find her best friend, Aartissa. She straightened up and then with a sigh, she said, “Didn’t I tell you not to call me that? Where is Rosia?”

“She asked me to meet you here. Oh there she is! Hey, Rosia, over here!” Aartissa raised her hand and waved at a girl standing near the main gate of the library.

As Rosia walked over to join them, Nissa sighed and said, “Remind me again, how did both of you guess, that I was in the library?”

Both the girls giggled at her question. Finally Rosia said, “C’mon now, tell me where else are we supposed to find our cute little boring bookworm?”

Nissa got angry and said, “What did you say?” The other two burst out into laughter at her reaction. And Rosia finally said jokingly, “Oh, pardon me, your Highness!”

Nissa turned to glare at her as both of them continued to giggle.

Just that moment a car came and stopped beside them. The driver, stepped out and said, “Are you ready to get back, your highness?”

Nissa replied, “Yes, We will return now.”

He replied, “Sure, please get in.”

As the car started, Rosia said, “Jokes apart, Nissa, next week is going to be one hectic week, you know.”

Nissa looked out of the window, let out a sigh and said, “Yes. Of course I know that.”

Rosia said, “What’s with that reaction? Shouldn’t you be extremely happy right now? You are going to have a fairy tale wedding you know. Getting married to the son of the present king must be a dream come true for every girl of our age.”

Nissa said, “Oh come on. It’s nothing like that you know. This is a political marriage. Just a substitute for the war, because our country can’t afford to go through a battle right now. That’s all there is to it. This is our way of surrendering our kingdom to him, that’s all.”

Aartissa said, “Why can’t we afford a war, princess?”

Nissa said, “First, stop calling me that! And about that, I am the one who is not prepared for the battle. I am in a sorry state right now. If that’s how the commander feels, the situation is pretty bad, don’t you think?”

Aartissa stared in shock at Nissa. Finally she said, “It’s so rare of you to say something like that, Nissa! You are usually very strong-willed aren’t you? What’s wrong?”

Nissa lowered her face and finally almost in a whispering voice said, “Well, nothing lasts forever, you know…”

Rosia said, “Huh,I’m sorry, What did you…?”

The car came to a halt and the driver interrupted their conversation. “We have reached, your highness!”

Nissa quickly recovered from her daze and said, “Ah we are back! Guys I will talk you to again later then. I just remembered I have an urgent appointment now. Bye!”

Saying that Nissa rushed inside the castle leaving Aartissa and Rosia standing there surprised. Aartissa and Rosia glanced at each other and shrugged. Finally they headed back inside too.

Back inside, somewhere in the shadows, Nissa hurriedly rushed through the hallways leading to her chamber, with someone following close behind her. After sometime he asked, “What’s wrong, Nissa? You seem so .. agitated.” Nissa shook her head irritably and said, “I have been too careless lately. It’s getting really troublesome now. We need to hurry up and get over with this.”
